dMAT Test for Indian Students: What APS Changed from 2027
APS India has introduced the dMAT test for Indian students applying to select Master's programs in Germany, starting with the summer semester 2027 intake. Here's what it means for you.
What is the dMAT test for Indian students?
The dMAT test for Indian students is a new standardized aptitude test introduced by APS India for selected Master's applicants. It applies to students whose previous degree falls under Engineering, Commerce or Finance, or Business and Management. The test is administered by g.a.s.t., not APS itself, and the result becomes part of your APS documentation. It's required for applications linked to the summer semester 2027 intake and onward, though several exemptions apply.
Who needs to take the dMAT?
Not every Master's applicant is affected. APS India has limited the dMAT requirement to three broad fields of study. If your previous degree falls outside these, you can skip this entirely for now.
Engineering
All Engineering disciplines fall under the affected list.
Commerce / Finance / Economics
Includes Accounting, Finance, and Economics degrees.
Business / Management
Covers Business Administration and Management programs.
Studied something interdisciplinary like Data Science, Business Analytics, or Engineering Management? APS India maintains an official affected fields list to classify these borderline cases, so check it directly before assuming either way.
Who is exempt from the dMAT?
- Bachelor's applicants are not affected at all
- Bachelor's students who haven't completed 5 semesters (3 year program) or 7 semesters (4 year program)
- PhD applicants
- Anyone whose degree field falls outside Engineering, Commerce/Finance, or Business/Management
- Applicants in officially confirmed exchange, double degree, or university partnership programs
There's also a transition rule worth knowing. If you completed your APS online registration before 29 June 2026, or shipped your complete APS documents before that date, you're exempt for that application, even if APS verification is still in progress. And if you already hold an APS certificate, the dMAT doesn't apply retroactively.
dMAT timeline for the first test in India
The test will run at licensed centers across India, including Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi, and Pune. Seats are first come, first served, so register early if your preferred city fills up fast.
What the dMAT does not replace
A common worry is whether a good or bad dMAT score decides your APS outcome. It doesn't, on its own. Here's what stays unchanged:
- It does not replace anabin recognition status of your university or degree
- It does not replace your university grades or transcripts
- It does not replace APS document verification
- A low score does not automatically lead to APS refusal
- It does not guarantee or block admission, since that decision stays with the German university
Before registering, check your APS certificate status and confirm your university's anabin listing. If your institution shows H+/- or H-, the dMAT won't change that classification.
What Indian students should do next
If your degree falls in one of the affected fields and you're applying for the summer semester 2027 intake or later, plan around the 15 September registration deadline. Register on the g.a.s.t. portal, pick a test center near you, and budget the €150 fee. Keep your portal login safe since that's where your certificate gets released after 12 October.
While you're at it, this is also a good time to sort out the rest of your application. Check our guides on the German student visa process, student health insurance in Germany, and top German universities for international students so nothing holds up your application later.

Is the dMAT mandatory for all Master's applicants?
No. Only applicants whose previous degree falls under Engineering, Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics, or Business/Management need to take it. It applies to applications relating to the summer semester 2027 intake and onward.
Who is exempt from the dMAT requirement?
Bachelor’s applicants, Bachelor’s students who haven’t completed 5 semesters (3 year program) or 7 semesters (4 year program), PhD applicants, students whose degree field isn’t on the affected list, and applicants in officially confirmed exchange, double degree, or university partnership programs are all exempt.
I already completed my APS online registration or shipped my documents before 29 June 2026. Do I still need the dMAT?
No. If you completed your APS online registration before 29 June 2026, or shipped your complete APS documents before that date, you’re exempt from that application, even if verification is still ongoing.
Can I submit my APS documents without the dMAT certificate?
If the dMAT applies to you, the certificate is a required part of your documentation. However, if you registered for APS on or after 29 June 2026, you can submit your APS documents first and send the dMAT certificate later once it’s available. All other required documents still need to follow the standard APS checklist.
Does a low dMAT score get my APS application rejected?
No. The dMAT is not a pass or fail test for your APS certificate. APS verification still focuses on document authenticity and formal plausibility. A low score does not automatically lead to refusal.
Does the dMAT replace anabin recognition or my university grades?
No. The dMAT certificate does not replace anabin status, university recognition, your grades, or your transcripts. It’s an additional academic test result and one part of your overall application, not a substitute for any of these.
Where can I take the dMAT, and how much does it cost?
Test centers are spread across Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi, and Pune, with the final list shown during registration. The fee is €150, payable to g.a.s.t. during registration. Seats are first-come, first-served.
