The game covers around 100 of the most useful German verbs: regular, stem changing, strong, mixed, modal and separable. It checks your answer instantly and shows the correct form when you slip, so every mistake teaches you something.

How to play German verb conjugation game

  1. Pick a level. Each level adds new tenses and harder verbs.
  2. Press Check to start the 90 second race.
  3. Type only the verb form. For Perfekt, type both words, like hat gemacht.
  4. No umlaut keys? Type ae, oe, ue and ss. They count as correct.
  5. Wrong answers cost 3 seconds. Skip costs 1 second.

Tips to win at German Verb Conjugation Game

  • For er, sie and es, most verbs end in t. Stem changing verbs change the vowel too: er liest, er fährt.
  • Verbs of movement and change usually form the Perfekt with sein.
  • Verbs ending in ieren have no ge in the participle: studiert, telefoniert.
  • Separable prefixes jump to the end in Präsens and Präteritum: ich rufe an.

Which tenses can I practise?

Präsens, Perfekt, Präteritum, Plusquamperfekt and Futur I, spread across five levels.

Do I need to type the pronoun?

No. Type only the verb form. If you type the pronoun too, it is ignored.

Can I type without umlauts?

Yes. ae, oe, ue and ss are accepted as ä, ö, ü and ß.

How many verbs are included?

Around 100 high frequency verbs, including all modal verbs and common separable verbs.

Is this suitable for beginners?

Yes. Level 1 only uses the present tense of common regular verbs plus sein and haben.

How do you conjugate German verbs?

Take the stem of the infinitive and add the ending for the person: e, st, t, en, t, en in the present tense. Irregular verbs change the stem too.

When do German verbs take sein in the Perfekt?

Verbs of movement or change of state, like gehen, fahren, fliegen, werden and sterben, plus sein and bleiben.

What are stem changing verbs in German?

Verbs that change their vowel in the du and er forms of the present tense, like fahren to du fährst or lesen to er liest.
